Thursday, October 24, 2024: Standard Chartered Pakistan hosted an INVITE IBA session at their Head Office in Karachi. This session was a continuation of the INVITE IBA series designed to foster connections and insightful discussions on relevant topics in today’s landscape.
Moderated by Ramsha Shadab (IBA Alum from the Batch of 2022) the event featured Dr. S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director IBA and Saadya Riaz (IBA Alum), Managing Director and Head of Wealth and Retail Banking, who engaged in a thought-provoking dialogue on "The Future of Retail Banking and Economic Recovery Post-Crisis."
Dr. Zaidi kicked off the conversation by shedding light on key economic drivers, highlighting the stabilization of the economy and the pivotal role of banks in lending to the private sector. He underscored the drop-in investment rates and the importance of cultivating a diverse workforce, particularly the rising involvement of women in various sectors. Dr. Zaidi noted how today’s students exhibit remarkable adaptability, making them invaluable assets in shaping the future economy.
Saadya Riaz followed with her insights on the transformative shifts within the banking sector. She emphasized the enhanced engagement from the State Bank and the ongoing efforts to widen access to banking services. She elaborated on how digitalisation, when paired with a human touch, is reshaping customer experiences, empowering individuals to define their financial identities and preferences.
Both leaders spoke about the integration of new technologies, especially in empowering women through innovative financial literacy initiatives delivered via mobile platforms. They also discussed the changing socio-economic landscape, the growing brain drain and the multifaceted challenges Pakistan faces, including the IMF debt cycle.
The event attracted over 100 engaged participants including the presence of Mr. Rehan Shaikh, CEO & Head of Coverage, Standard Chartered Pakistan. The event concluded with a lively Q&A segment, allowing attendees to exchange thoughts and ideas. Malahat Awan, Director of Alumni Affairs, expressed her gratitude for the robust participation and highlighted the essential role alumni play in uplifting their alma mater.
